Are you stressed out?
If you’re like most people, the answer is yes. Left uncontrolled, stress can lead to the serious compromise of our health. Stress that is left unchecked can lead to heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity. Not to mention the toll that it takes on us emotionally. Stress affects our body, mind, and spirit in profound ways.
Nowadays, people are turning to many different methods to lower their stress levels, from yoga and meditation to walking. One healing modality that is starting to grab the attention of many people is Reiki. Pronounced ‘Ray-Key’, Reiki was created in 1914 in Japan by Dr. Mikao Usui and was introduced to the United States in the 1930s.
So, what exactly is Reiki?
Reiki is a form of alternative medicine and is referred to as ‘energy healing’. One thing that modern medicine has failed to recognize, until now, is that we are energy from head to toe, and we need to be treated on an energetic level for our body to be in a state of wellness. It is the reason that over 850 hospitals in the United States are now utilizing Reiki as part of their treatment programs. When we have blockages of energy anywhere in the body, they can lead to health conditions, manifesting either physically or emotionally.
How does Reiki work?
Reiki is essentially a transfer of energy. Energy is transferred from the practitioner to the client through the palms of the practitioner in order to activate the body’s natural healing processes. The body has an incredible power to heal itself, given the right tools, and Reiki is certainly one of them. During the session, some may feel heat in the practitioner’s hands, some may feel cool hands, and others may feel tingling throughout their body. Some may even fall asleep in a deep state of relaxation. The sensations will differ from person to person. Reiki energy will go wherever it is needed in the body, even if the client does not feel it.
Reiki will put the body in a deep state of relaxation. When we relax, our muscles become less tense, and our blood pressure, heart and respiratory rate become lower. Reiki works to help us achieve a deep state of mental and physiological rest.
Not only is Reiki a great tool for relaxation, it can be helpful in dealing with:
- Acute and chronic pain or discomfort
- Post-operative recovery
- Healing of wounds and injuries
- Effects of serious illnesses
- Depression
- Sleep issues
- Headaches
- Lack of focus and concentration
- Lack of energy
